FAQ
Aluminium
Read the aluminium guide
When will an aluminium Digital Product Passport be mandatory?
The application date is not fixed. The Working Plan indicates 2027 for adoption of aluminium rules. The final act will set its scope and application date.
What data will the aluminium passport contain?
The final product-specific fields are not yet adopted. Use preparation material to identify useful data, while keeping assumptions separate from confirmed requirements.
We already report under CBAM. Is that enough?
CBAM compliance does not automatically satisfy future DPP requirements. Existing embedded-emissions data may be useful, but the final DPP scope, methodology and information requirements must be checked separately.
Will every extrusion need its own passport?
That is not settled. The product-specific act will determine the required level. Map your existing model, batch and item identifiers so you can assess the eventual requirements.
Furniture
Read the furniture guide
When will a furniture Digital Product Passport be mandatory?
The application date is not fixed. The Working Plan indicates 2028 for adoption of furniture rules. The final act will set its scope and application date.
What data will the furniture passport contain?
The final field list is not yet adopted. Materials, durability, repair and end-of-life information are useful preparation topics, not a confirmed furniture passport specification.
Does EUDR compliance count toward the passport?
EUDR compliance does not replace DPP compliance. Origin documentation and reference information may be useful for preparation. ESPR Annex III also allows the relevant act to require access to information mandated by other Union legislation.
Is the formaldehyde restriction related to the passport?
The formaldehyde restriction is a separate REACH requirement applying from 6 August 2026, subject to its scope and exceptions. Relevant test data may help future passport preparation. This does not mean all test results will be publicly disclosed.
Does this apply to small furniture makers?
ESPR has no general SME exemption from future passport duties. Check the relevant act. Under EUDR, micro and small operators generally have the 30 June 2027 date, but those already covered by EUTR have 30 December 2026. Duties also depend on the business’s role.
We only assemble, we do not make components. Does it still apply?
An assembler may have manufacturer or other operator obligations. Check how you place the finished product on the market and the applicable rules. Missing supplier data does not automatically excuse non-compliance.
Mattress
Read the mattress guide
When will a mattress Digital Product Passport be mandatory?
The application date is not fixed. The Working Plan indicates 2029 for adoption of mattress rules. The final act will determine when its requirements apply.
What data will the mattress passport contain?
The final field list is not yet adopted. Material composition, durability and disassembly are useful preparation topics, but they should not be presented as confirmed mattress passport fields.
Are mattresses covered by the furniture delegated act?
The Working Plan treats furniture and mattresses as separate groups, with indicative adoption years of 2028 and 2029. Check the scope of the adopted acts for each product in your range.
We already pay mattress EPR fees. Does that count?
EPR obligations are separate from ESPR. Existing records may be reusable, but participation in an EPR scheme does not establish compliance with future DPP requirements.
Should we start a passport project now?
A proportionate data-preparation project can be useful now. DPPVIEW helps organise product information and identify gaps. Final mattress requirements are still pending, and our hosting platform is in development.
Passport preparation
Read the passport preparation guide
We do not have any of this data. Can you still help?
Yes. We start by checking what is already available in product records, reports and supplier documents. Then we identify what still needs to be requested, measured or created.
Can you register our passports with the EU for us?
That is not part of our current offer. We provide preparation support. Registry verification, registration and any delegated access must follow the applicable rules and the Commission’s current guidance.
Who is responsible if a supplier gives us wrong data?
The responsible economic operator retains its legal obligations. Our checks can identify structural gaps or inconsistencies, but they do not independently certify the truth of a supplier’s declaration.
How long does this take?
It depends on the product range, available data and supplier response times. We assess the scope with you and agree a realistic plan.
Do we need this if our product group has no date yet?
You can start with a proportionate review of existing data. We distinguish adopted requirements from proposals so you can avoid treating assumptions as final obligations.
How long will a passport need to stay available?
The applicable product rules determine the required period. ESPR does not impose a universal “product lifetime plus ten years” rule. Hosting terms will be published when our platform is ready.
Can we do the data work ourselves and just use your platform?
The platform is not available yet. You can prepare your own data or use our preparation service while hosting is in development.
Is there a certification for Digital Product Passport platforms?
Not yet. ESPR allows the Commission to set requirements for DPP service providers and, where appropriate, a certification scheme through a delegated act. That act has not been adopted and is expected between late 2026 and 2027. Today the formal reference point is the set of harmonised DPP standards cited in Implementing Decision (EU) 2026/1736. Our conformance statement covers the QR data carrier (EN 18220) and does not certify the whole platform.
Textiles
Read the textiles guide
When will a textile Digital Product Passport become mandatory?
The application date is not fixed. The Working Plan indicates 2027 for adoption of textile-apparel rules. The final act will set the scope and application date.
Does the passport apply to fabric and yarn?
The preparatory study focuses on finished apparel. Fabrics, yarns and fibres supply data for those products, but the final legal scope must be checked in the adopted act.
Do we need one passport per garment or per style?
The product-specific act will decide. The study discusses model, batch and item approaches and the practical limits of each. Do not treat any study option as an adopted legal requirement.
Our upstream suppliers will not share data. What happens?
Supplier data gaps can make preparation harder. Start by identifying the missing evidence, agreeing requests and recording unresolved issues. A supplier’s refusal does not automatically remove the responsible operator’s legal duties.
Is workwear or sportswear covered?
The study considers technical apparel, including workwear and sportswear, subject to proposed exclusions such as PPE and medical devices. Final scope depends on the adopted act.
Toys
Read the toys guide
When do toys need a digital product passport?
From 1 August 2030 for toys within the regulation’s scope when placed on the EU market. Regulation (EU) 2025/2509 entered into force on 1 January 2026, and some provisions already apply.
Is the toy passport part of ESPR?
No. It comes from the Toy Safety Regulation, which is its own instrument. It does not depend on an ESPR delegated act or on the ESPR working plan.
Does it apply to every toy or only some?
The passport requirement applies to toys within the regulation’s scope when placed on the EU market from 1 August 2030. Check the definition and exclusions. There is no battery-style capacity threshold for toys.
We import toys from outside the EU. Who is responsible?
Both the manufacturer and importer have duties. An importer must check compliance before placing the toy on the market. If you market it under your own name or trademark, manufacturer obligations can apply to you.
What happens to toys already on the market in 2030?
Toys placed on the market in conformity with Directive 2009/48/EC before 1 August 2030 may continue to be made available under Article 55. EC type-examination certificates issued under Article 20 of the Directive remain valid until 1 February 2031 unless they expire earlier.
Does the passport replace the label and the warnings?
No. Warnings, age markings and safety information a buyer needs before purchase stay physically on or with the toy. The passport supplements them.
Should we wait until closer to 2030?
You can begin by reviewing product records and supplier evidence. Plan any changes or testing that your products need, and check the actual requirements of your sales partners.
Tyres
Read the tyres guide
Is a tyre Digital Product Passport mandatory yet?
A tyre-specific ESPR DPP obligation has not yet been adopted. The Working Plan indicates 2027 for adoption of tyre rules. Existing tyre-labelling and EPREL duties continue to apply within their scope.
Does COM(2026) 565 create a tyre passport?
No. It proposes amendments to the Energy Labelling and Tyre Labelling Regulations, including links with the DPP Registry. It does not itself create adopted tyre passport requirements.
Will we have to register tyres twice?
The proposal aims to avoid duplicate registration where equivalent information is already available in EPREL. Whether and how this applies will depend on the final legislation and product rules.
Does the EU tyre label survive?
Yes. The proposal keeps the label and its role in purchasing decisions, while giving the Commission power to amend its parameters by delegated act, including to align with ESPR information requirements.
What about retreaded tyres?
The future tyre-specific ESPR act will determine its DPP scope and requirements. Existing rules for retreaded tyres are a separate question and should be checked for the product concerned.
