How Digital Product Passports Build Consumer Trust

Verifiable product data replaces vague claims, giving customers a reason to believe what brands say.

Clear product claims need evidence. A Digital Product Passport can make structured information about a product easier to find, including the data required by the applicable rules. It does not automatically verify the truth of that information.

What is a Digital Product Passport?

A Digital Product Passport links a digital record to a product through a data carrier, such as a QR code. The applicable rules determine the carrier, required information, access rights and whether the passport covers a model, batch or item.

EU passport requirements come from several legal frameworks. Battery passports are governed by the Battery Regulation. Product-specific delegated acts under ESPR will set requirements for groups such as textile apparel, steel, aluminium, furniture and tyres.

Why trust needs verifiable data

Trust is easier to build when a claim can be checked. Where the data is available and accessible, a passport can link a recycled-content claim to its evidence and the responsible organisation. The existence of a passport alone is not proof of certification.

  • Transparency: product information is published in a consistent, structured format rather than scattered across websites and PDFs.
  • Accountability: every data point has an owner, so it is clear who stands behind each claim.
  • Consistency: the same information reaches consumers, retailers, repairers and authorities, each with the access level they need.

What customers see when they scan

A customer-facing passport page can make product information easy to read on a phone. Depending on the applicable rules and access rights, it may include:

  • materials and substances used in the product
  • country of manufacture and key supply chain steps
  • carbon footprint and other environmental indicators
  • care, maintenance and repair instructions
  • how to return, resell or recycle the product at the end of its life

A passport turns a product from a black box into an open book, and open books are easier to trust.

Trust is a business advantage

Publishing accurate, supported product information can help customers assess claims and find care, repair or take-back information. Optional customer services, such as warranty registration, require their own privacy arrangements; access to a passport should not depend on providing unnecessary personal data.

Getting started

Start with the product information you hold and the evidence behind it. DPPVIEW helps organise that data and identify gaps with suppliers. Preparation is available now; the hosting platform is in development.
